Abu Dhabi Airport Terminal A

Zayed International Airport (AUH), formerly Abu Dhabi International Airport, is the primary aviation gateway for the capital of the United Arab Emirates. It is a major hub for Etihad Airways and serves millions of passengers annually with connections to destinations across the globe.

Historical Background and Origins

The history of civil aviation in Abu Dhabi dates back to the late 1960s, when Al Bateen Airport was established as the first international airport under the initiative of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan. Construction began in 1966, and the airport was officially opened in 1970, but it quickly became insufficient due to rapidly growing air traffic.

By the mid-1970s, planning for a larger airport began. The current site, located about 15 kilometers from Al Bateen, was selected, and construction started in 1977. The new Abu Dhabi International Airport was inaugurated on January 2, 1982, replacing Al Bateen as the main international facility21. Over the years, the airport expanded with multiple terminals to accommodate increasing passenger numbers.
